Question

A point charge q = +43.0 mu C moves from A to B separated by a distance d = 0.168 m in the presence of an external electric field E^rightarrow of magnitude 300 N/C directed toward the right as in the following figure. (a) Find the electric force exerted on the charge. magnitude _________ N direction (b) Find the work done by the electric force ________ J (c) Find the change in the electric potential energy of the charge. __________ J (d) Find the potential difference between A and B. V_B - V_A = __________ V

Explanation / Answer

q = 43 uC

d = 0.168 m

E = 300 N/C

a) electric force, F = qE = 43 x 10-6 x 300 = 12.9 x 10-3 N (in the direction of electric field)

b) work done by force, W = Fd = 12.9 x 10-3 x 0.168 = 2.1672 x 10-3 J

c) change in electric potential energy = -W = -2.1672 x 10-3 J

d) change in potential, VB - VA = -Ed = -300 x 0.168 = -50.4 V
