Question

Two blocks each of mass m = 2.57 kg are fastened to the top of an elevator as in the figure below. (a) If the elevator has an upward acceleration a = 1.60 m/s2, find the tensions T1 and T2 in the upper and lower strings. T1 = Incorrect: Your answer is incorrect. Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. N T2 = Correct: Your answer is correct. N (b) If the strings can withstand a maximum tension of 94.0 N, what maximum acceleration can the elevator have before the upper string breaks? m/s2

Explanation / Answer

(a) Total acceleration = 9.81 + 1.6 = 11.41 m/sec^2
T1 = 2.57 x 11.41 = 29.32 N ( lower string)
T2 = 5.14 x 11.41 = 58.64 N (upper string )

(b)94 = 5.14 x ( 9,81 + a )
a=18.28-9.81=> a = 8.477 m/sec^2 ans
