Question
Use the maps of sea-level temperatures to answer the following questions.
Figure 1. Global mean sea-level temperatures in January in degrees Celsius.
Figure 2. Global mean sea-level temperatures in July in degrees Celsius.
1.If latitude were the only control of temperature, the isotherms would run straight across the maps from east to west. Describe one region of the world where this hypothetical isotherm pattern is actually observed. Briefly explain why the hypothetical pattern is seen here more strongly than in other regions?
2. Is the influence of cool ocean currents on temperatures more pronounced in July or January? Explain how this is evidenced and make mention of the general locations where this is most evident.
3.Comparing the January map with the July map, describe one region of the world that exhibits a large annual temperature range (the difference between the January and July average temperatures). Briefly explain why that location has a particularly large annual temperature range.
Explanation / Answer
1. Latitude is not the only control of temperature . Temperature is also controlled by cloud cover, wind, presence of water bodies ,ocean currents ,vegetation etc . So i don't think you would find the hypothetical isotherm anywhere
2. Generally it is more pronounced in the summer . They can keep summer temperatures way down in the winter ,they often keep temperatures from getting too cold .In pacific northwest and parts of northern california average summer highs are often in the low to mid 70 much cooler than many places with a continental climate
3.black is the right answer and it depends on the rotation of sun
