Question
A spaceship of mass 2.1×106 kg is cruising at a speed of 4.4×106 m/s when the antimatter reactor fails, blowing the ship into three pieces. One section, having a mass of 4.8×105 kg , is blown straight backward with a speed of 2.4×106 m/s . A second piece, with mass 8.1×105 kg , continues forward at 1.3×106 m/s .
Part A
What is the speed of the third piece?
Express your answer using two significant figures.
Part B
What is the directionof the third piece?
What is the directionof the third piece?
or Straight forward
Straight backwardExplanation / Answer
Net momentum in the beginning = mv = 2.1*10^6*4.4*10^6 = 9.24*10^12 kg m /s
Momentum of the other two pieces = (4.8*10^5)*(-2.4*10^6) + (8.1*10^5)*(1.3*10^6)
= -0.99*10^11 kg m /s
so , Momentum of the third piece
= 9.24*10^12 + 0.99 * 10^11
= 9.339*10^12 kg m /s
mass of the third piece = 2.1*10^6 - ( 4.8*10^5 + 8.1*10^5)
mass of the third piece = 8.1*10^5 kg
so the speed of the third piece = momentum / mass
V = 9.339*10^12 / 8.1*10^5
V = 1.15*10^7 m/s
a)velvoity of the third part is 1.15*10^7 m/s
b) since the mometum is +ve so the direction of the third piece is straight forward
