Question
A circuit contains two resistors (R1 = 10 ? and R2 = 21 ?) and two capacitors (C1 = 11 ?F and C2 = 5 ?F) connected to a 8 volt battery, as shown in the diagram above. The circuit has been connected for a very long time.
(b) Calculate the current in the 10 ? resistor.
(c) Calculate the potential difference between points A and B.
(d) Calculate the charged stored on one plate of the 5 ?F capacitor.
(e) The wire is cut at point P. Will the potential difference between points A and B increase, decrease, or remain the same. Justify your answer.
Explanation / Answer
b) After a long time the capacitors acts as open ckt.
so, Rnet = R1 + R2
= 10 + 21
= 31 ohms
so, Current through R1, I = V/Rnet
= 8/31
= 0.258 A <<<<<<<<<<<------------Answer
c) VAB = I*R2
= 0.258*21
= 5.42 volts <<<<<<<<<<<------------Answer
d) C12 = C1*C2/(C1+C2)
= 11*5/(11+5)
= 3.4375 micro F
chharge on c2 = C12*VAB
= 3.4375*5.42
= 18.63*10^-6 C or 18.63 micro C <<<<<<<<<<<------------Answer
e) remain the same <<<<<<<<<<<------------Answer
because, the capacitors already acting as open ckt.
