Question
PLEASE SHOW YOUR WORK. THANK YOU.
I've posted this before, but got both answers incorrect. Thank you so much in advance.
A) How much energy is required to change a 35-g ice cube from ice at 30°C to steam at 115°C?
____(MJ) (The answers I got were 158 MJ, 0.259 MJ, 2.59 MJ)
B) What percent of the time will you get something in the range from 60 heads and 40 tails through 40 heads and 60 tails when tossing 100 coins? The total number of microstates in that range is 1.221030.
_____% (The answerI got was 61%)
Explanation / Answer
A)
m = mass = 35 g
heat required is given as
H = Heat for (-30 C to 0 C) + heat for melting of ice + Heat for (0C to 100 C) + heat for boiling + heat for (100 C to 115 C)
H = m (2.03) (0 - (-30)) + m(334) + m (4.2) (100 - 0) + m (2260) + m (2.02) (115 - 100)
H = (35) ((2.03) (0 - (-30)) + (334) + (4.2) (100 - 0) + (2260) + (2.02) (115 - 100))
H = 108682 J
H = 0.11 MJ
