Question

A 60.0 kg astronaut is on a space walk away from the international space station when her tether line breaks. She is able to throw her 10.0 kg auxiliary oxygen tank away from the station with a speed of 12.0 m/s to propel herself back to the station. (Believe it or not, her primary tanks stop working at the same time!) Assuming that she starts from rest (relative to the station), determine the maximum distance she can be from the station when the line breaks and still return within 60.0 s (the amount of time she can hold her breath).

Explanation / Answer

here momentum remain conserve

m1v1 = m2v2

10 * 12 = 60 *v

v = 2 m/s

here given time = 60s

max distanc = v *t

d = 60 *2 = 120 m
