Question
Two long, straight, parallel wires are 10.0 cm apart and carry 4.20 A currents in the same direction
A) Find the direction of the magnetic field at point P1, midway between the wires.
B) Find the magnitude of the magnetic field at point P1, midway between the wires. Express your answer in telsas to three significant figures.
C) Find the direction of the magnetic field at point P2, 31.0 cm to the right of P1.
D) Find the magnitude of the magnetic field at point P2, 31.0 cm to the right of P1. Express your answer in telsas to three significant figures.
Explanation / Answer
The direction of the B field is found using the right hand rule. The B field encircles the wire. If you are looking down the wire, watching the current come toward you, the B field is in a counterclockwise direction.
The B field at the midpoint between the to wires will therefore be zero because viewing from above, the right hand wire has a B field coming out of the floor and the left hand wire has a B field going into the floor.
At the midpoint between them, the fields are of equal strength but in opposite directions and cancel.
To the right of P1, the B fields add. uo = 4pi*10^-7
Use B = uo*I/2pi*R => B = [4pi*10^-7*4.2/[2*pi]]*[[1/0.31 + 1/[0.31+0.10]] = 4.76x10^-6
