Question

13. A test cross of a tall, yellow flowered dihybrid
tomato produced 63 tall yellow, 57 short white, 214
tall white and 226 short yellow plants. What is
the map distance between the tall and yellow
genes?
A. 9.1
B. 12.0
C. 21.4
D. 36.4
E. None of the above, the genes are not linked

I thought the answer should be E because the parental phenotypes should be more prevalent in the results, but the answer is C. I can get the answer C by either doing 63+57/560 or doing 214 + 226/560, and then subtracting it from 100. Can someone please explain to me how they would approach this problem, because when I did it there was no doubt in my mind that the genes were not linked.

Explanation / Answer

the answer is C because the mapping between the tall and yellow genes is ratio of tall plates of yellow and short plates of white by the total number of plates because this is gives the probability of getting a tall and yellow plate or an exactly opposite configured plate
