Question

A wire on the x-axis carries a current to the left. A ring is dropped at a location where y>0 and z is about 0. The ring is in hte x-yplane and is traveling in the y direction.

a) specify the direction of the magnetic field from the current carrying wire, if any, at the location of the ring.

b) specify the direction of the induced magnetic field in the ring if any.

c) specify the direction of the induced current in the ring, if any, the ring barely missed the wire and is now in a location where y<0

d) specify direction of the magnetic field from the current carrying wire, if any, at the location of the ring.

e) specify the direction of the induced magnetic field in the ring if any.

f) specify the direction of the induced current in the ring, if any.

Explanation / Answer

The wire is placed along X-axis and carrying current along negative X -axis.Ring is in the XY plane and falling along Y-axis. Z coordinate of ring is slightly greater than zero.

Right now ring is in the region y > 0

a) direction of magnetic field from the current carrying wire at the location of ring is along negative Z -axis.

b) We are looking at the ring with + Z axis coming towards us. Magnetic flux through the ring is inward and increasing. Hence by lenz's law induced current in the ring is counter clockwise and direction of the induced magnetic field is along + Z axis (towards us)

c) Direction of induced current is counter clockwise when we are looking at the ring with +Z axis coming out towards us

Now the ring is in the region y < 0

d) direction of magnetic field from the current carrying wire at the location of ring is along positive Z -axis.

e) We are looking at the ring with + Z axis coming towards us. Magnetic flux through the ring is outward and decreasing. Hence by lenz's law induced current in the ring is counter clockwise and direction of the induced magnetic field is along + Z axis (towards us)

f) Direction of induced current is counter clockwise when we are looking at the ring with +Z axis coming out towards us
