Question
The figure below is a pressure versus volume graph where the different curves represent different processes done on a gas. Starting at the origin to point 1, the pressure and volume are increased to 2736 Pa and 3.74 m^3 respectively. From 1 to 2 the gas expands at constant pressure to a volume of 6.74 m^3. From 2 to 3 the pressure rises to 4492 Pa. And finally from 3 to 4 the gas expands again to 10.51 m^3. Using the ranking module, rank the curves from the most positive to the most negative amount of work done on the gas. What is the total work done on the gas? W_- 4 =Explanation / Answer
For process 1 :
W1 = area under the line = (0.5) (2736) (3.74) = 5116.32 J
For process 2 :
W2 = area under the line = (2736) (6.74 - 3.74) = 8208 J
For process 3 :
W3 = area under the line = (4492 - 2736) (6.74 - 6.74) = 0 J
For process 4 :
W4 = area under the line = 4492 (10.51 - 6.74) = 16934.84
Ranking :
W4
W2
W1
W3
Total work done = 5116.32 + 8208 + 0 + 16934.84 = 30259.2
