Question
The figure below is a pressure versus volume graph where the different curves represent different processes done on a gas. Starting at the origin to point 1, the pressure and volume are increased to 2559 Pa and 4.08 m3 respectively. From 1 to 2 the gas expands at constant pressure to a volume of 7.08 m3. From 2 to 3 the pressure rises to 4738 Pa. And finally from 3 to 4 the gas expands again to 10.00 m3. Using the ranking module, rank the curves from the most positive to the most negative amount of work done on the gas.Explanation / Answer
Here ,
as the gas is expanding , the workdone on gas is negative
as the work done is given as
WOrk done = area under the P-V curve
for W01 = area under 0 -1 curve
W01 = 0.5 * 2559 * 4.08
W01 = -5220.4 J
---
W12 = area under 1-2 Curve
W12 = -2559 * (7.08 - 4.08)
W12 = -7677 J
---
W23 = area under 2-3 curve
W23 = 0 J
----
W34 = -4738 * (10 - 7.08)
W34 = -13835 J
the ranking of work is
2 -3
0 -1
1-2
3-4
--------------------------------------
total work done = W12 + W01 + W23 + W34
total work done = - (5220.4 + 7677 + 0 + 13835)
total work done = - 26732.4 J
the total work done on the gas is - 26732.4 J
