Question

A) A car is traveling at 77.22 mph. The driver applies the brakes and the car decelerates at 3.04 m/s2.  What is the stopping distance in meters?

B) A mirror faces a cliff located some distance away. Mounted on the cliff is a second mirror, directly opposite the first mirror a distance 1,186.99 away and facing toward it. A gun is fired very close to the first mirror. The temperature on the day is 15.84 oC. How many times does the muzzle flash of the gun travel the round trip distance between the mirrors before the echo of the the gunshot is heard?

Please answer BOTH. Thank you

Explanation / Answer

A)
Speed of car = 77.22 mph
Speed of car in m/s = 34.52 m/s

Final velocity v = 0
Initial velocity u = 34.52 m/s
a = -3.04 m/s^2

We know ,
V2 = U2 + 2 *A *S
0 = 34.522 - 2 * 3.04 * S
S = 34.522 / 2 * 3.04 m
S = 195.99 m

Stopping distance in meters = 196 m
