Question
Electrostatics: charge flow questions. I have already attempted to answer them, i just need to know if my answers are correct or not. Thanks!
1.) Rubbed with a neutral material like cotton, what type of charge, either positive, negative, or neutral, should be on the nylon wand? And the PVC wand?
Wouldnt the positive nylon wand stay positive. and wouldnt the negative PVC pipe stay negative. Both the PVC wand and the nylon wand are coming into contact with a neutral material, which would mean that the cotton would become charged with whatever object it comes into contact with because of conduction.
2.) If you charge the nylon wand with the green vinyl sheet, will the wand become positive, negative or neutral? Explain your reasoning.
They nylon want is positivly charged and the green vinyl sheet is negativly charged. Wouldnt the excess electrons from the vinyl transfer to the nylon wand causing it to have a net negative charge because youre Charging by Conduction Using a Negatively Charged Object.
3.) Consider PVC and wool: If you charge the PVC wand with the wool cloth, will the wand become positive, negative, or neutral? Explain your reasoning.
The PVC is negativly charged and the wool is positively charged. Wouldnt the PVC wand become more positively charged because you are Charging by Conduction Using a Positively Charged Object.
4.) Key Difference between Incudtion and Conduction?
The key difference is the way that the charge is transferred. Conduction requires involves the contact of a charged object to a neutral object while with induction there is never a transfer of electrons between the charged object and the object being charged. The electron movement happens between the object being charged and the ground.
**5.) PVC and wool: Repeat the above activity, this time using PVC and wool. Record your observations. In terms of movement of electrons, explain how this induction process is different from the former experiment using nylon rubbed with vinyl.
PVC is negativly charged and the Wool is positvley charged. This is different from the experiment above because neither of the objects are neutral. The PVC pipe should obtain a positive charge from the wool.
