Question

Two forces, F? 1 and F? 2, act at a point, as shown in the picture. (Figure 1) F? 1 has a magnitude of 8.00N and is directed at an angle of ? = 55.0? above the negative xaxis in the second quadrant. F? 2 has a magnitudeof 7.00N and is directed at an angle of ? = 53.3? below the negative x axis in the third quadrant.

Part A

What is the x component Fx of the resultant force?

Express your answer in newtons.

Part B

What is the y component Fy of the resultant force?

Express your answer in newtons.

Part C

What is the magnitude F of the resultant force?

Express your answer in newtons.

Part D

What is the angle ? that the resultant force forms with the negative xaxis? In this problem, assume that positive angles are measured clockwise from the negative x axis.

Express your answer in degrees.

Explanation / Answer

F1x = Fx cos theta

F1x = 8 * cos ( 180-55)

F1x = -4.588 N

F2x = F2 cos theta

F2x = 7 cos (270-53.3)

F2x = -5.61 N

so Fx net = -5.61 -4.588 = -10.2 N

--------------------------

F1Y = FY sin theta

F1y = 8 sin(180-55)

F1y = 6.553

F2y = 7 sin (270-53.3)

F2y = -4.18 N

so

Fnet Y = 6.553-4.18 = 2.366 N

-------------------------------

Fnet^2 = Fx^2 +Fy^2

Fnet^2 = 10.2^2 +2.366^2

Fnet = 10.47 N

---------------

apply for anglr tan theta = Fy/Fx

tan theta = 2.366/-10.2)

tan theta = -13.05 deg
