Question

A solid cylinder of radius r1, length h1, emissivity ?, and temperature T is suspended in an environment of temperature Tenv. (a) What is the cylinder's net thermal radiation transfer rate P1? (b) If the cylinder is stretched until its radius is r2, keeping its height and temperature unchanged, its net thermal radiation transfer rate becomes P2. What is the ratio P2/P1? Express your answer in terms of the variables given and the Stefan-Boltzmann constant ?. Please give me a clear answer that I can understand.

Explanation / Answer

a) we know that P = ??A(Tenv^4 - T^4) we know that area of cylinder is

( 2*pi*r1*h1* + 2*pi*r1*r1)

so P1 = ??( 2*pi*r1*h1* + 2*pi*r1*r1)(Tenv^4 - T^4)

b) in this case all of the other parameters are same and only radius is changing from r1 to r2 so

the P2/P1 = ( 2*pi*r2*h1* + 2*pi*r2*r2)/( 2*pi*r1*h1* + 2*pi*r1*r1)
