Question
Doing a late night cramming session... these are the questions i cant figure out. The assignent is due in 8 hours!!
1) Sunjamming. A "sun yacht" is a spacecraft with a large sail that is pushed by sunlight. Although such a push is tiny in everyday circumstances, it can be large enough to send the spacecraft outward from the Sun on a cost-free but slow trip. Suppose that the spacecraft has a mass of 875 kg and receives a push of 36 N. What is the magnitude of the resulting acceleration?
If the craft starts from rest how far will it travel in 1 day?
How fast will it be moving after 1 day?
2) A car traveling at 63 km/h hits a bridge abutment. A passenger in the car moves forward a distance of 59 cm (with respect to the road) while being brought to rest by an inflated air bag. What magnitude of force (assumed constant) acts on the passenger's upper torso, which has a mass of 43 kg?
3)In frustration, you throw your Physics book straight down from a cliff with an initial speed of 21.5 m/s. The book hits the ground after 7.06 s. Ignoring air resistance, how high was the cliff?
4)You throw a ball vertically upward at 22.2 m/s, and then catch it at the same height that you released it. Ignoring air resistance, how high did the ball rise? Ignoring air resistance, how long will it take for the ball to return to your hand? Enter the time for the total trip. What is the ball's speed just before it returns to your hand?
5)A jet airplane touches down on an airport runway with a speed of 207 km/hr. It slows at a constant rate to a stop over a time period of 9.27 s. How far does the jet travel along the runway before stopping?
6) An automobile accelerates from rest at 2.11 m/s2 for 20.0 s. The speed is then held constant for 20.0 s, after which there is an acceleraton of -3.01 m/s2 until the automobile stops. What is the total distance traveled?
7) A boy stands on a bridge 14.9 m above the water, and he drops a water balloon on a boat of unsuspecting tourists. The boat is traveling at a constant speed of 11.7 m/s (toward the bridge), and the boy manages to hit a tourist on the boat with the balloon. How far away from the base of the bridge was the boat when the boy released the balloon?
Explanation / Answer
1 F=ma
36=875a
a=0.041 m/sec2
2)
63 km/h = 17.5 m /s
So the person goes from 17.5 m/s to 0 m/s over a distance of 0.55m
v^2 = u^2 - 2as (negative because deceleration)
0 = 17.5^2 - 2as
a = 278.4 m/s^2
F = ma
F = 45 x 278.4 N
