Question

4) GREEN ENERGY SOURCES Petroleum and coal can meet the energy demands of the United States for decades to come, but a.) What are some of the benefits of burning hydrogen (H2) for energy to run your car, to provide b.) Where can you get H2? How can you make it? (4 points) c.) What are some risks of converting to a Hz economy? (2 points) are causing costly climate changes locally and globally due to emitted CO2 electricity, and/or to heat your home? Be specific. Hint: do some research. (4 points)

Explanation / Answer

4. GREEN ENERGY SOURCES:

a. Hydrogen is the most basic of all earth elements and can be widely utilized to generate energy. As a gas form it can be used in fuel cells to power up engines. Hydrogen gas when combines with oxygen, results in a chemical reaction which generates electricity and heat. Hydrogen gas can also be burned to power vehicle engines. Some if the major advantages of hydrogen gas are it is a renewable energy with abundant supply and is also a clean energy source. Apart from all these hydrogen gas practically does not cause any harm or destruction to human health, so it can be considered as non-toxic.

b. The most abundant components in the universe do include hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen literally is the most occurring component which makes up 75% of the universe. In fact hydrogen plays a greater role in the sustainability of life. To be honest hydrogen gas is far more efficient than other sources of energy, and can be produced from natural gas, coal and biomass. Hydrogen can also be produced from renewable energy such as wind, solar and hydroelectric power.

c. While there are enormous benefits of hydrogen, the major risk involved with hydrogen when it is in gaseous state is that IT IS VOLATILE. Its volatile nature renders it risky to use and work around. Today hydrogen energy is widely used to power most hybrid vehicles, but unknown fact is that hydrogen energy is very expensive. The major risk of converting hydrogen energy cannot sustain the entire human population and it would take years to become the most used source of energy.
