Question

4)      Current airbag regulations specify that they must only pass a test designed to protect a 175 pound male who is not wearing a seatbelt.  There is currently a discussion of lowering the explosive force by 30%, so that smaller-sized people (including women) would be less subject to injury due to the explosive force of the airbag; this would be adequate to protect seatbelted individuals of around 175 pounds, but not enough for substantially heavier individuals or those not wearing seatbelts. (Note:  current airbags cost about $30. to manufacture).

Ethical question:  In one paragraph, discuss what you think of this proposed regulation, which is currently being discussed in the federal government.

5)      Suppose that the US military is considering a new lifetime regulation on their helicopter rotor blades.  Instead of using them for 1000 hours (which leads to a likelihood of 5 failures per 10,000 blade sets), they are considering reducing the likelihood of a crash by replacing the blades after 500 hours, thus reducing the likelihood of a crash to 1 failure per 10,000 blade sets.  Assuming a fleet of 10,000 helicopters, and assuming the helicopters are flow for 1000 hours/year, and a cost per set of blades of $5000.,

a)      estimate the extra cost per year due to the increased use of blades

b)      estimate the cost savings due to fewer crashes (assume a cost of $1million per helicopter, assume an average of two people in the helicopter, and remember that helicopter crashes are usually fatal).

c)       Based on your calculations, what would you recommend?

6)  Determine the bonding type between the following types of atoms:

Al-Ni, Si-Ge, C-O, Fe-O, Ne-Ar

(Hint:  use the electronegativity table in Callister).

7)       Explain why a Ti atom is larger than a Cu atom.

Explanation / Answer

for people not wearing the seat belt, we cannot regulate the law which puts others in risk. but as discussed earlier, this new aiirbag ensures safety of smaller persons, espacially women. the safty of women is of greater importance than man, also probablity of survival of a person greater than 175 pounsds in a crash is high. hence it is feasible to reduce thwe exzplosive force.

10000 helicoptors * 5000$ cost of one set of blade gives an extra expanse of 5000000$ ( 5 million)

savings - 3 crashes ( initially, there was rate of failure of 5 in one year. now it is 1 in 6 months. hence there is saving of 3 helicoptors ion a year. mneaning 3 million dollars.

also a typical insurance policy of a soldier is in the range of 800000$ - 1 million when there is a technical failure/accident. hence by saving 3 crashes, we save 6 lives, menaing 6 million dolllars in insurance money.

total savings are 3 million from helicoptors, 6 million from insurance, and increased expanse is 5 million. hence total savings are 4 million dollars.

al - ni is ionic, si-ge is covalent, c-o is covalant, fe-o is covalant, ne - ar is covalent bond. ( higher the electronegetavity diffrence, the bond is ionic)

22 Ti titanium : [Ar] 3d2 4s2

29 Cu copper : [Ar] 3d10 4s1

Ti atom has fully filled s orbital, while copper has semi filled s orbital. also, the sheilding effect provided by titanium is less than copper. hence ti radius is greater than coppor
