5) Two primary metamorphic textures used to classify metamorphic rocks are:
a) Foliated: This type of texture is formed due to parallel alignment of minerals. The rocks composed of this type of texture are schist, gneiss, slate, phyllite etc.
b) Non-Foliated: lack of presence of any foliation. The rocks composed of this type of texture are quartzite, marble etc.
6) Four main environments where metamorphism occurs are as following:
a) Diagenesis: As more sediments added the pressure temperature at the bottom increase which causes metamorphism. Low grade metamorphic rocks such as zeolite formed by this process.
b) Intrusion: This type of metamorphism occurs due to igneous intrusion. Very high temperature of the intrusive body causes metamorphism. Contact metamorphic rocks such as hornfels formed by this process.
c) Subduction: Metamorphism occurs due to high pressure over the subducting plate. Here high pressue and low to moderate temperature metamorphic rocks such as blueschist formed.
d) Mountain building: Here metamorphism occurs due to pressure of the overridig of thrusting of the materials. Metamorphic rocks formed in this settings are highly foliated. An example of this type of settings is Himalayan mountain range.
