How would porosity values change if the experiment was conducted with poorly sorted sediment? Part B: Observe the three rock samples provided: A) Coquina, B) Shale, C) Pumice. Complete your response with high or low where appropriate. For descriptions of rocks refer to the chapter on groundwaterin the course module, OER textbook, or lecture textbook.

Explanation / Answer

Part A)

1) For fine sand Porosity(%) = pore space vol/total volX100

Here Pore space vol = 50ml - 18ml = 32ml

Total Vol = 50ml

Porosity(%) = 32/50*100 = 64%

For coarse sand Porosity(%) = pore space vol/total volX100

Here Pore space vol = 50ml - 21ml = 29ml

Total Vol = 50ml

Porosity(%) = 29/50*100 = 58%

2) If the experiment was conducted with poorly sorted sediment then its porosity will be less than sorted sediment.

well sorted (grains of approximately all one size) materials have higher porosity than similarly sized poorly sorted materials (where smaller particles fill the gaps between larger particles).

A well-sorted sediment tends to have greater porosity than a poorly sorted sediment because of the lack of grains small enough to fill its pores.
