Question
For this exercise, we will define the scientific method according to the Oxford Dictionaries: “A method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.”
Noting that:
“Criticism is the backbone of the scientific method.”
“The process is based on presently valid scientific methods.”
An example answer, based on the “begging the question” fallacy presented in the video, would include the definition of that fallacy and could be as follows: The begging the question fallacy, which presents a circular argument in which the conclusion is included in the premise, contradicts the scientific method because it does not present a way to test the hypothesis presented.
choose five more logical fallacies and, following the example above, describe how they contradict the scientific method.
Explanation / Answer
The other five fallacies are-
1)False dilemma- it neglects the scientific approach to judge the things because in this we have many options to do things but we are provided with only two.
2)Red herring-It fails on scientific scale because the people uses irrelevant facts to distract someone.
3)Slippery Slope-Generally this fallacies happen when someone assumes a small action will lead to extreme result. It fails on scientific scale because there are no scientific assumption.
4)Straw Man Fallacy-It occurs when someone ignoring the original point and willing to prove his wrong fact i.e without scientific knowledge. So it again doesn't check the scientific validity of facts.
5)Wand Wagon-It is a fallacy in which many people believe in single thing i.e culture without any scientific proof ; so it again falis.
