Explanation / Answer

EARTHQUAKES :

INTRODUCTION: Earthquake is the sudden movement of earth causing vibrations which are produced by the elastic energy within the earth's surface. In other words Earthquake is the earth's best natural means of releasing stress. The earthquake size is called its MAGNITUDE.

BACKGROUND: To understand the concept of earthquake first consider that earth's surface is on the move and the CRUST(earth's surface) is just not one entire piece. It is a large PUZZLE with many pieces and those particular pieces are termed TECTONIC PLATES. These plates are in constant movement but they don't move fast but earthquakes do occur when one plate bumps or drags alongside with another plate.

MAIN SUMMARY: In an earthquake huge rock surfaces beneath the earth's surface undergo vibration and they occur constantly but they are very small to notice and in some cases Earthquake can cause severe damage to life and property. The location below the earth's surface where an earthquake starts is called HYPOCENTER and the exact location above the hypocenter on earth's surface is called EPICENTER.

The movement of tectonic plates is so powerful that this movement releases huge energy creating SESEMIC WAVES and these sesemic waves are the reason why ground Shake during Earthquake. Scientists use SESIMOMETERS using them the location of Earthquake can be calculated. And the intensity of earthquake is measured on the RICHTER SCALE.

Earthquakes mostly occur around the edge of PACIFIC OCEAN region. Studies found that almost 70 percentage of earthquakes do occur in this particular region and the areas include China, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, North and South America. The most powerful and dangerous Earthquake ever recorded had a magnitude of 9.5 which occurred in CHILE.

CONCLUSION: Currently there is no way to predict Earthquake and scientists are working to scientifically predict earthquakes in advance. Earthquakes can destroy people, property and lead to deaths. But earthquakes are just the beginning of damage that occur and other devastating risks to be considered are TSUNAMIS and LANDSLIDES.
