Question
Use the four compounds below lo answer the following questions Indicate the relationship between the following pairs of compounds: Compounds A and B Compounds A and C Compounds B and D If the compound A has a melting point of 150 degree C, what would you expect the melting point of compound B would be? What would you expect the melting point of compound C would be? List two physical properties that are different between the two following pairs of compounds: Compounds C and D Compounds B and D Is the mixture of 70% of compound A and 30% of compound C optically active? Why? Give the relative amounts of compound A and C so that mixture would not be optically activeExplanation / Answer
2)
a) Compounds A and B are diastereomers
Compounds A and C are Enantiomers
Compounds B and D are diastereomers
b) Enantiomers have smiliar properties while diastereomers have different physical and chemical properties.
B will have a melting point different from A while C will have the same melting point
c) Both pairs will differ in physical properties like their melting points, boiling points and density.
d) A and C are enantiomers and since one is present in excess (A), the mixture will rotate the plane polarized light i.e it will be optically active in the direction which is charcteristics of the excess enantiomer (A)
e) A and C will have to be in the ratio 50:50 (racemic mixture) for it to be optically inactive.
