Question

The abbreviated ground slate electronic configuration for chlorine is [He] Is^2 2p^5[Nc] 3s^2 3p^5 The number of unpaired electrons in the ground stale of a gaseous arsenic atom is one. two. three. four. Which element has the greatest affinity for an electron? Tc I Sb Cl Which alkaline earth element is in the fourth period? calcium titanium strontium potassium Which element has the largest ionization energy? (A) N (B) F (C)K (D) S Which factor accounts for the fact that phosphorus has an unexpectedly higher first ionization energy than sulfur? (A) atomic radius atomic number electron configuration (D) molecular form The oxidation number of C in is (A)+2. (B) +3. (C) +4. (D) +6. What is the oxidation number of chromium in the dichromate ion,

Explanation / Answer

42. The atomic number of Cl is 17, so the preceeding noble gas is Neon, therefore the abreviated configuration would be:

[Cl] = [Ne] 3s2 3p5

43. Arsenic has the atomic number of 34, so it's configuration would be:

[As] = [Ar]3d10 4s2 4p4

This means that it has 6 electrons, if we put these electrons unpaired in boxes:
[1!] [1!][1][1]

Theese means that we have two unpaired electrons.

44. Affinity raises while we are going upward and to right of the periodic table. In this case, Cl is the one that has the better affinity.

45. Looking at the periodic table, we can say that Calcium (Ca) it's in the fourth period.}

The other four questions post them in another question thread. Hope this helps
