Question
MagtrieveTM is known to oxidize a variety of alcohols. In the original article (Tetrahedron Letters, Vol. 38, No. 22, p. 3857-3860) pertaining to this reagent, all of reactions were run in a solvent. Would any of the alcohols listed below be suitable as reactacts in a solid-state oxidation in a solvent-free reaction (i.e., only using MagtrieveTM)? Explain answers conceptually. If one or more of these alcohols is NOT suitable under these conditions, explain why.
4-fluorobenzyl alcohol
4-bromobenzyl alcohol
1-decanol
For background information, in my experiement we used liquid 4-chlorobenzyl alcohol with Magtrieve (solvent-free rxn) to get 4-chlorobenzaldehyde.
Explanation / Answer
Olefins are not oxidized under these conditions; thus alcohols react selectively in the presence of alkenes.
1-decanol is not suitable becase it has no alkenes in its structure.
