Question

Do you know an alternative way of stating the Second Law? If so, write it in your own words. Can you see how to reconcile the differences between the two statements? We first encountered the concept of reversible vs. irreversible change in Chapter 2. Consider an expanding gas: how would a reversible expansion differ from an irreversible expansion? what do you know about the change in entropy of the universe during the two processes? Show that the units of entropy are J/K using the thermodynamic definition of entropy. What do you know about a state function, based on what you learned in Chapter 2?

Explanation / Answer

a) They differe in the amonut of work done. If work is done on the system by reversible process work done is to be divided by efficiency to get actual work.

If system does work , actual work is to obtained by multiplying with efficiency.

b) for reversible process total entropy change is =0 and for irreversible process total entropy change>0

c)delS= dq/T

where dQ= heat added or removed = joules

hence delS= J/K

c) state functions are independent of the path, for example internal energy depends upon the initial and final conditions and is independent of the path.
