Question

Describe and discuss Mendel's experiments in which I use pea plants. Discuss why I study characters that only had two alternate shapes (i.e. violet or white). Mention and describe the parental crossings (generation P) used and obtained in the generation F1 and F2. To what conclusion did Mendel arrive with these experiments? What conclusions do you think you would have had if you finished the experiment when you saw the results of the F1 generation? Describe and discuss Mendel's experiments in which I use pea plants. Explanation / Answer

1) Mendel experiments of independent assortment of genes in which homozygous round, yellow peas(dominant) are crossed with homozygous green wrinkled (recessive) peas leading the formation of yellow round peas in F1 generation.

YYRR(yellow round) x yyrr(green wrinkled) as parental cross

All progeny in F1 generation are heterozygous with yellow round in the ratio of 4.

After selfing of yellow round in F1 generation will lead to the generation of yellow wrinkled peas, green wrinkled peas and green round peas in F2 generation. The ratio of yellow round peas is 9:16, yellow wrinkled 3:16, green round ratio 3:16 and green wrinkled peas ratio 1:16 in F2 generation.

Cross For F2 generation.

F2 generation ratio is 9:3:3:1.

2)Purple flower of peas with depiction PP is dominant over the white flower with expression pp, so cross of PP x pp in F1 generation will form all progeny as Pp,Pp,Pp,Pp with heterozygous purple flower.

F1 generation---

The ratio of F1 generation is all 4 heterozygous purple color flower.

Selfing of heterozygous purple color flowers  Pp for production of F2 generation.

The F2 generation leads to the production of PP (purple), Pp(purple), Pp(purple), pp(white) in the ratio of 3:1 phenotypic expression and 1(purple homozygous):2(purple heterozygous):1(homozygous white) as genotypic expression.

After F1 generation a test cross can be done between Pp(heterozygous purple), and pp(homozygous white) for F2 generation.

The result obtained will be 2:2 or 1:1 genotypically and 2:2 or1:1 phenotypically as Pp will be heterozygous purple and pp will be white recessive.
