Question
Describe and discuss one mechanical and one chemical process of weathering that contribute to sediment maturity. There are three components that may be used to describe clastic sediment maturity: shape; size; and. mineralogical. Describe and discuss how and why these measures of sediment maturity develop during sediment transport. Sediment transport in streams and rivers may be sub-divided into the bed-load, suspended load and dissolved load. Describe the relationship between the three components of sediment transport, and the related concepts of flow rate and regime, grain size, and sediment mobility.Explanation / Answer
Q-8:
Example of mechanical weathering process: Frost wedging
This process occurs as water expands when it is freezed. Due to this process, sedimentary rocks are breaking apart by repeated cycles of freeze-thaw.
It happens when the rock is repeatedly wetted and dried: here, salt crystals are dissolved from the rock , and then they grow when they are dried.
Both of the above processes can result in heaving of rocks. They look like patterns of bricks set in a pavement. They eventually become chaotic jumbles of bricks.
Example of chemical weathering: Oxidation
The chemical formula for oxidation is:
4Fe+2 +3O2 ---------> 2Fe2O3
Here, ferrous iron combines with oxygen to form ferric iron oxide (hematite). Thishappens to all iron-bearing silicates .
Examples of eaction minerals: hematite, limonite, and goethite.
