Question

The decomposition of sulfuryl chloride (SO2Cl2) is a first-order process. The rate constant for the decomposition at 660 K is 4.5 10-2 s-1. (a) If we begin with an initial SO2Cl2 pressure of 355 torr, what is the pressure of this substance after 60. s? torr (b) At what time will the pressure of SO2Cl2 decline to one half its initial value? s By what factor will the pressure of sulfuryl chloride decrease after 7 half lives? Note: The answer wants this value: (355 torr)/value = final pressure after decay value

Explanation / Answer

for first order reaction

lnP= lnP0-kt

where P= pressure at time t P0= initial presure = 355 torr

k= 4.5/100= 0.045/sec

lnP= ln(355)-0.045*60 =3.172

P= exp(3.172)= 23.85 torr

b) time required for P= P0/2

ln(P0/2)= lnP0- 0.045*t

ln (1/2)=-0.45*t

t= 0.693/0.045=15.4 secoonds

first hald life, it beomcs P0/2, second half life P0/4, third P0/8, fourtg P0/16, fifth P0/32, sixth P0/64 sand seventh

P0/128=355/128 =2.773 torr
