Question
A pure iron electrode is immersed in an aqueous environment containing 10^-2 M Fe^2+ ions. It is connected to a pure iron electrode immersed in an aqueous environment containing 5x 10^-3 M Fe^2+ ions.
(i) A voltage is generated between the two electrodes. why?
(ii) which electride is positive and which one is negative? Why?
(iii) What is the magnitude of the voltage generated between the two electrodes?
(iv) The more dilute aqueous environment is replaced by pure water. What is the magnitude of the voltage generated between the two electrodes in this case?
(v) What can you deduce from the answer that you obtained in (iv)?
Explanation / Answer
In general the spontanius equation is:
a A + b B c C + d D
° Fe2+/Fe3+ = ° Fe2+/Fe3+ + 0.059Log5x10^-2 M=0.771 -0.118=0.653
° Fe2+/Fe3+ = ° Fe2+/Fe3+ + 0.059Log5x10^-3 M=0.771 - 0.177=0.594
(i) and(iv) Yes there is a voltage generated becaise the concentration diference betwen two electrodes.
°pila=0.653-0.594=0.059
(ii) The Anode is Fe2+(10^-3M)
Tha catode is Fe2+(10^-2M)
