Question
A pump and pipeline system delivers water at a temperature of 4°C from reservoir A to B. The water surface elevation in reservoir A is 50.0 m, and the water surface elevation in reservoir B is 60.0 m. The pipe has a length of L 3,000 m, diameter of D = 0.50 m, and a Darcy-Weisbach friction factor of f-0.021. Minor losses include an entrance, an exit and a swing-type check valve. The pump characteristic curve is shown in Table P42. Determine the flow rate and the head added by the pump at the operating conditions Answer : Hp=67 m Table P42 0.00 0.15 0.30 0.45 0.60 0.75 0.90 1.05 Hp (m) 91.4 89.8 85.1 77.2 65.9 52.6 36.6 15.7Explanation / Answer
We have Darcy Weisbach Equation, = hf = f x (L/D) x ( v2 / 2g) ; where
hf = Major Loss
f = Moody Friction Factor
L= Length of the Pipe, m
D = Dia of the Pipe, m2
V= Velocity in m/s
g= Acceleration due to gravity (m2/s)
By substituting the above given values we get,
V= 1.2m/s
Discharge, Q= V.A
Therefore, Q= 0.235m3/s
By using the chart/ Table P42, we get Hp = 87m
