Question

PLEASE SHOW ALL WORK!!

In lab, the following electrodes will be available: aluminum, carbon, copper, lead, magnesium, platinum, silver and zinc. In lab, the following solutions will be available: 0.1M and 0.001M copper(II) sulfate, aluminum nitrate, lead(II) nitrate, magnesium sulfate, silver nitrate, zinc sulfate, sodium hydrogen sulfite, potassium permanganate, and 1.0M sulfuric acid.

a. Report the standard electrode potential for the Cu° / 0.1M Cu^2+ half cell including the half reaction.

b. Report the standard electrode potential for the Al° / Al^3+ half-cell including the half-reaction.

c. report the standard electrode potential for the Ag° / Ag^+ half-cell including the half-reaction.

d. During the expirement, you must select six half-cells to construct besides Cu° / 0.1M Cu^2+ half-cell. We have just done two, so now from the above list, pick four other half-cells you wish to set up and report the standard elctrode potential including the half-reaction for each.

Explanation / Answer

Cu2+(aq) + 2e- -------> Cu(s) ; E0 = 0.34 V

Al3+(aq) + 3e- -----> Al(s) ; E0 = -1.66 V

Ag+(aq) + e- ------> Ag(s) ; E0 = 0.8 V

Zn2+(aq) + 2e- -----> Zn(s) ; E0 = -0.76 V

Mg2+(aq) + 2e- -----> Mg(s) ; E0 = -2.36 V

Pb2+(Aq) + 2e- ---> Pb(s) ; E0 = -0.13 V
