If the cereal provides 100% of the DRI for all vitamins and minerals, then is Liz correct that it doesn't matter what else she eats during the day? If not, why not? What factors besides the percentage of DRI does Liz need to consider?Explanation / Answer
Cereals are one of the best choices one can have for breakfast as they have fewer calories than any other breakfast option. As for supper like any other good diet plan it depends that whether your daily calorie intake is balanced or not.Cereals have less fat, less cholesterol and more fibres.Whole grain cereals reduces the risk of coronary heart diseases, maintains healthy glucose and insulin level.Wholegrains contain vitamins, minerals and hundreds of phytonutrients and also contain fibre. Many fortified cereals contain more iron, vitamins and fibres than non cereal products.
Cereals provide 100% DRI but eating only cereals for supper is not a healthy option. The food we eat should be classified into many broad categories like:
Fruit and vegetables: Rich in vitamin A and C,minerals dietary fibres, contain pritective nutrients
Grain and cereals: These are starchy food group, they are best source of B vitamins, vitamin E
Milk and dairy products
Meat,Fish and Egg group: these are rich in protein.
Fat and oil group: A small amount of your food should be made up of fatty and sugary foods.
A healthy and balanced diet is important to protect the body from chronic diseases such as heart diseases, stroke and diabetes. Thus it is important to find the right balance between different nutrients to acheive healthy lifestyle
Besides the percentage of DRI( dietary reference intake ) one should always look for the presence of carbohydrates, fats proteins ( for energy ).Minerals and other nutrients to help our body stay healthy.
