Question

What do you look for in a good story? What prompts you to suggest a "good read" to a friend? What keeps you riveted from cover to cover? Are there any screen adaptations which ended up being better than the book, or vice versa?  Also, do you read a book first, then watch the movie, or movie first, then movie?   Any thoughts? For those of you who can never find time to read or watch a movie, which genre appeals to you most? Fiction/nonfiction, comedies/drama/thrillers, etc.?

Explanation / Answer

A good story has a well knit plot that has enough twists and suspense which keeps the reader on their toes. The characters are as important as their characterization and the novelty in dialogues keeps the story interesting too. A good story most of the time starts with the ending and takes the reader through flashback or starts in the middle goes to flashback and gets back to the middle and resume.

A good read according to me hasn’t allowed me to sleep until I completed the book. It depends on whether I like the author and have read his previous book that was interesting or it has got some novel idea or shift in belief system. I also consider the genre of the book as I like historical novels a lot.

Normally, each chapter will end with a question or suspense which keeps me interesting. In my opinion, books are always the best as it helps me with my imagination and thought process as I read. In a book, there are only descriptions of people, place and events but it’s me who construct the complete picture but in movies everything is readily available. I have read all Don Brown’s books and watched the movie adaptations but I always read the books first and then watched the movies.

I like fiction that is set on the historical background. Studying historical novels is like looking into a mirror and reflect it on the contemporary society. History helps us shape our present.
