Question

Answer the following questions regarding a solution of benzene and toluene that exhibits ideal behavior. Include detailed calculations, to determine each of the following: What will be the composition in terms of mole percentages of a benzene-toluene solution that has a vapor pressure of 280 torr at 60 degreeC? At 60 degreeC, Pdegree_bentene = 300 torr; What will be the partial pressures in torr of the two components in the solution at 60 degreeC? What will be the composition of the vapor at 60 degreeC? Report the composition in terms of mole percentages.

Explanation / Answer

Total pressure= x1P1sat+x2P2sat

where x1= mole fraction of Benzene and x2= mole fraction of toluene. P1sat and P2sat are saturation pressures

280= x1*300+(1-x1)*100

280= x1*300-100x1+100

200x1=180

x1=180/200 =0.9 and x2=0.1

from y1P= x1P1sat

where y1P=Partial pressure of Benzene = 0.9*300= 270 Torr and toluene = 0.1*100 = 10 torr

since y1P= 270, y1= 270/280= 0.964 and y2= 1-0.964= 0.036
