Question
Answer the following questions regarding a solution of hexane and heptane that exhibits ideal behavior Given at 25 degree C: p degree hexane and p degree heptane = 45.0 torr. by displaying your entire detailed caluculations determine the value of each of the following a) What will be the composition in terms of mole percentage of a hexane - heptane solution that has a vaopr pressure of 53.5 torr at 25 degree C? b) What will be the Partial Pressures in torr of the two components in the solution at 25 degree C? C) What will be the composition of the vapor at 25 degree C? Report the compostion in terms of mole percentages.Explanation / Answer
a) Pohex = 64.0 torr
Pohept = 45.0 torr
Total pressure = P = 53.5 torr
P = xhex Pohex+ xhept Pohept
Mole fraction of hexane = xhex
mole fraction of heptane = xhept
xhex + xhept = 1
xhex= 1 - xhept
So, P = (1 - xhept) Pohex+ xhept Pohept
53.5 = (1 - xhept) 64.0 + xhept 45.0
53.5 = 64.0 - (64.0-45.0)xhept
53.5-64.0 = -19.0 xhept
-10.5 = -19.0 xhept
xhept = 10.5/19.0
xhept = 0.552
xhex = 1- 0.553 = 0.447
Mole percentage of hexane = xhex*100 = 44.7 %
Mole percentage of heptane = xhept*100 = 55.3 %
b) Partial pressure of hexane = Phex = xhex Pohex = 0.447 * 64.0 = 28.6 torr
Partial pressure of heptane = Phept = xhept Pohept = 0.553 * 45.0 = 24.9 torr
c) Composition of vapour:
moles of Hexane = Phex /P = 28.6/53.5 = 0.534
Mole percentage = moles of Hexane *100 = 0.534*100 = 53.4%
moles of Heptane = Phept /P = 24.9/53.5 = 0.466
Mole percentage = moles of Heptane *100 = 0.466*100 = 46.6%
