Question
I am needing help with a question on a lab. I have all of the data but am having difficult time full understanding/putting it all together. Here is the question.
Check the Identification Matrix for each sample. Explain which test you would do next if you
were to continue trying to narrow down the identity of Media Test 5 on your own. And, also, for
Media Test 6. Be sure to give your reasons for choosing each test, based on what you see in
the Identification Matrix.
****I have attachments I need to post but am not sure where I can do this***** please help!!!
Explanation / Answer
The Identification Matrix shows your assigned unknown with the results you have recorded for it in the first column. The remaining microbes are shown in the additional columns along with their expected test results.
Microbes that do not behave in accordance with the results you record for your assigned unknown are automatically removed from the matrix.
The strategy for identifying unknowns is to eliminate all bacteria giving contradictory results to those found in the Identification Matrix. This is done automatically when you input results. Input a "+" result and all bacteria in the matrix with a "-" result are eliminated from consideration. Input a "-" and all bacteria with "+" results are eliminated.
Results other than "+" or "-" do not result in elimination of possible microbes. Any bacteria with results for that test of [+], d, or [-] remain in the matrix and are possible identities for the unknown. Once all tests have been completed and a single possibility remains, you must enter your identity for the unknown.
