Question
The questions asks to propose a series of reactions that would convert butane into 1-bromobutane. I understand we must first treat the butane with Cl2 in light to give us 1-chlorobutane. We cannot go directly into making 1-bromobutane due to selectivity issues. How do we convert 1-chlorobutane into 1-bromobutane as the major product? My teacher said using H-Br as a reagent undergoing SN2 will not produce 1-bromobutane in highest yields. In what ways, reagents, or conditions will produce 1-bromobutane from 1-chlorobutane?
Explanation / Answer
we cannot use HBr to displace Cl
KBr we can use. to displace Cl with Br
