Question

Prostacyclin is fascinating member of the prostaglandins, (at least for me). Draw its structure (it s on Wikipedia) and highlight the bond that is unusual for a prostaglandin. Draw the waxy ester that is acid and the ester of stearic acid and stearyl alcohol (the alcohol corresponding to stearic acid). If you wanted to hydrogenate 10.0 g of a 20:3 fatty acid to make the 20:0 saturated acid, how many grams of hydrogen gas (H_2) would react? Draw the phospholipid that is derived from glycerol, phosphate, choline, and palmitic acid. Is this phospholip a lecithin or a cephalin? What are the differences in structure between a glycerophosphocholine and a sphingomyelin? The active ingredient in Drano is NaOH. Explain why Drano can dear a fat clog in a sink drain.

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

20:3 fatty acid formula C20H34O2

Molar mass = 306.48 g per mol

Lets calculate moles of 20 :3 acid

Moles = mass/ molar mass

           = 10 g / 304.48 g per mol

           = 0.032629 mol

1 mol 20 :3 contains 3 double bonds

Therefore it will need 3 H2 moles

So lets calculate the moles of the H2 needed to react with 0.032629 mol acid

0.032629 mol acid * 3 mol H2 / 1 mol acid = 0.097886 mol H2

Now lets convert moles of H2 to its mass

Mass of H2 = moles * molar mass

                   = 0.097886 mol H2 * 2.02 g per mol

                   = 0.198 g H2

So it will take 0.198 g H2 to hydrogenate the 10 g 20 :3 acid
