Question

A 10.00 g sample consisting of mixture of sodium chloride and potassium sulfate is dissolved in water. This aqueous mixture then reacts with excess aqueous lead(II) nitrate to form 21.75 g of a mixture of lead(II) chloride solid and lead (II) sulfate solid. Write only the complete chemical equation(s) of the reaction(s) involved. Which of the following applies: a single reaction, or parallel reactions? If parallel reactions are involved, can they be added together if you were asked to do stoichiometric calculations? What type(s) of reaction(s) is (are) involved whose complete chemical equation (s) you are required to write from the wording of a problem? A glass vessel (rigid, but limited in the pressure of gas it can hold) contains 28 g nitrogen gas. Assuming ideal gas behavior, circle the letter(s) of the process(es) listed below that would double the pressure exerted on the walls of the vessel. Can this be solved for qualitatively using the "initial-final" containing version of the ideal gas law? Adding enough Hg(l) at the same temperature of the nitrogen to fill on half the container. Raising the temperature of the container from 30.0 degree C to 60. 0 degree C Raising the temperature of the container from -73 degree C to 127 degree C Adding 28 g nitrogen gas at the same temperature.

Explanation / Answer

1)it is a parallel reaction since, more than one compound reacts with lead nitrate.

the parallel reactions cannot be added together since, the reaction between nacl and lead nitrate is independent of the reaction between potassium sulfate and lead nitrate

2) there are two double decomposition reactions going on.

i)Sodium chloride + lead nitrate => lead(II) chloride + sodium nitrate

ii)lead nitrate + potassium sulfate => potassium nitrate + lead sulfate

3)a)since volume if halfved, the pressure will be doubled.(consequence of the ideal gas law)

c)temprature in kelvins is doubled. Hence the pressure will be doubled.

d)the number of moles of the gas is double, hence ht epressure will be doubled

all these are a direct consequence of idea gas equation: PV=nRT
