Question
Mark and Recapture Method Problem
Ecologists are interested in the fish population in a pond. (Counts given)
Using a net, trap some fish in the pond.
Count the number of trapped individuals and mark them with a tag – M1 (300)
Return these to the pond so they can mix back in with the rest of the fish population
Trap individuals a second time and count them – some will be unmarked – M2 (250)
some will be marked – Mr (45)
Calculate the population density estimation of the number of fish in the population.
Use the numbers given (in red) to calculate:
Estimated fish population = ____________
Our study is taking place in a 20 acre pond.
Population density = __________________
Explanation / Answer
Ans: Estimated fish population= 300/45*100 = 667
for Population density
population density = number of people / land area
converting acre into square miles
100 acre = 0.157 square miles
667/0.157 = 4248 fish/square miles.
