Question
True story! I found an advertisement listed in the October 2013 issue of the magazine, Natural Awakenings. The article was about a man named, Braco, from Croatia. Braco makes no claim to the efficacy of his "gift" but he travels around the world gazing at people. The people claim that his gaze transforms their lives, heals, and they are "happier" after the gazing experience. You can find more information about Braco at, www.braco.me. Design an experiment to test the following hypothesis: Braco's gaze increases vitality in humans. You must include the following: Dependent variable Independent variable At least 4 standardized variables At least 2 appropriate controls Be detailed about your design, all of your variables and how you would measure your variables! DO NOT ASSUME I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! Include predictions of what kinds of results you might expect to find. You may work in groups, but every person must turn in their own, type written work (please spell and grammar check!). This is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday, June 14^th at the latest, but may be turned anytime before the 14^th. This is worth 20 points.Explanation / Answer
Hypothesis: Braco's gaze increases vitality in humans.
Experiment: To test this hypothesis, case control study is designed. People who are exposed to Braco's gaze are cases and those who are not exposed are controls. Controls are selected such that they are comparable to cases as closely as possible by matching for known confounding factors like age and sex. Vitality is defined according to some objective criteria like becoming free of disease and increased sense of well being. Variables like age, sex, place of residence, the amount of time exposed to Braco's gaze are standardized in both the groups - cases and controls. Vitality is measured in both the groups. Odds ratio is calculated from the obtained data. Finally, we have to interpret wheather the increase in vitality in people exposed to Braco's gaze is statistically significant over the other group.
Dependent variable - vitality
Independent variable - Braco's gaze
Standardized variables - age, sex, place of residence, duration of exposure
Controlled variable - age and sex
