Question
True story. In the 1970s, large amounts of waste products from the production of Agent Orange herbicide were disposed of in shallow trenches near Alkali Lake in South Central Oregon. A principal toxic contaminant at the site is pentachlorophenol. Assume that pure NAPL pentachlorophenol has seeped through groundwater from the disposal site and is pooled in small quantities on the bottom of Alkali Lake. Because of the wet spring in 2017, Alkali Lake (a block-fault basin lake) actually has water in it (in dry years it is a dry desert playa). a. What is the maximum possible concentration of pentachlorophenol in the air directly above the surface of the lake? Give answer in units of mg m^-3 (ppb m/v). The occupational safety (OSHA) standard for 8-hour workplace exposure to pentachlorophenol is 0.5 mg m-3. Based on your calculation, would it be a good idea require safety respirators for workers at the Alkali Lake site?Explanation / Answer
Pentacholo phenol is used as an Insecticide foe cotrolling the insects attaching mainly on cotton. It is non-volatile however it has a strong smell of phenol & is acidic in characer with pungent smell. I suggest to use safety respirators for workers at the alkali lake site.
