These are my lab questions and here is the site for the lab: www.mhhe.com/biosci/genbio/virtual_labs/BL_07/BL_07.html . I am having a hard time with this lab and I have done the experiment. Im just not sure what to put into the data table and how to answer these questions.

1. The Arabidopsis plant can serve as a model for all flowering plants because it has the basic set of genes present in all plants. It also has small size and can self-pollinate. This helps us to produce many mutants. --------------------- 2. Yes the mutants showed variation from the wildtype under UV exposure and under high salinity conditions. The mutants were not able to tolerate UV exposure and high salinity like wildtype plants. This susceptibility may be due to the knockout genes in these mutants. --------------------- 3.the function of the gene that was knocked out could be the shape and size of the leaf. ------------------------ 4.Under UV exposure, the mutants showed broader, closely positioned leaves. These leaves also had hair on them. Under high salinity conditions, the mutants showed broader leaves without hair. --------------------- 5. I dont think it is possible to have a knockout mutant which does not differ phenotypically from the wildtype under all circumstances. Under normal conditions you may not see any difference but under difficult, different conditions, the presence of the mutation can be seen. -------------------- 6.The mouse was selected as a model organism for mammals as it is a small mammal which shows all the characteristics seen in mammals. It is much easier to grow mice in the lab. Experiments can also be done on them easily. They also have a large progeny and a short gestation of about 18-21 days. This makes it easy for researchers to develop a mutation and follow it in the offspring.
