I know the answer, but you can you help me derive it?
a 5.00 g sample of TNT (C7H5N2O6) is burned in a bomb calorimeter with a heat capacity of 420 J/degreeC. The calorimeter contained 610 grams od water (4.18J/gdegreeC) and the temperature of the water was measured to go from 20.0 degree C to 22.5 degree C. What is the heat of combustion of TNT?.
5.00g sample of TNT (C,H,N,O is burned in a bomb calorimeter with a heat capacity of 420 JPC. The calorimeter contained 610 grams of water (4.18J/gC) and the temperature of the water was measured to go from 20.0 C to 22.5 C.What is the heat of combustion of TNT? (3)-258.2 kJ/molExplanation / Answer
(4)C7H5N3O6(s) ---> (7)CO2(g) + (10)H2O(g) + (6)N2(g) + (21)C(s)
bomb calorimeter heat capacity of 420 J/degreeC
the combustion releases heat absorbed by both tha calorimeter & the water
heat of combustion = mCdT calorimeter + mCdT water
C = specific heat , m = mass and dT = change in temp
mCdT water = 610 grams *(4.18J/gdegreeC) * (2.5) = 6374.5
mCdT calorimeter = 420 J/degreeC
heat of combustion = 6374.5 + 420 = 6794.5
5.00 g sample of TNT = 5 / molecular mass = 0.022mole
he heat of combustion of TNT = 6794.5 / 0.022 308840.9
