Each unknown set of seven solutions consists of six salt solutions plus a solution of HCl. Each salt solution contains a pair of ions from the above list. All ions are used, and some are present in more than one solution.
1.) From looking at the table how many salts can be made from the listed ions? can solutions of all these salts be made? can any salts be eliminated from consideration as an unknown? which ones? why?
2.) Which cation-anion combinations (salts) precipitate from solution on mixing?

(1) For each cation, there are 5 different anions.
Total number of cations is 5.
Hence, the total number of salt solutions that can be prepared is 5 imes 5 = 25.
(2) Following cation anion combinations precipitate from solution on mixing.
(a) Ag+ and Br-
(b) Ag + and Cl-
(3) Since solid manganese (II) hydroxide is light brown, when a brown solution is obtained, it indicates presence of Mn(II) ions.
Solid silver oxide is brown black in colour and it forms in place of silver hydroxide.
Hence, Brown black solution indicates presence of Ag+ ions
Solid silver bromide is cream to light yellow. Hence, this colour of precipitate indicates presence of Ag+ ions.
(4)Solutions containing hydroxide ions are basic. For example, solution of NaOH is basic.
