Question
the labels fell off three bottles on the stock room shelf. The labels read 2-hexanone, benzaldehyde, and cyclohexanol. Solution :-
When aldehyde and ketones are reacted with 2,4-DNP reagent then they forms the derivatives of the 2,4-DNP to give yellow , orange or redish brown precipitates.
but alcohols do not react with the 2,4-DNP
therefore if the
chemical in the bottle is tested with the 2,4-DNP reagent and if do not show any test then it confirms that it is not aldehyde or ketone that means the chemical from the bottle is the alcohol which is cyclohexanol.
Bottle chemical + 2,4-DNP -------- > No change in color = Alcohol = Cyclohexanol
bottle chemcial + 2,4-DNP ----- > yellow , orange or red color = aldehyde or ketone
Then to separate the aldehyde and ketone
if we perform the iodoform test then we can identify the methyl ketones
Hence
bottle reaget + 3I2 --------- > positive test = 2-hexanone
because 2-hexanone is the methyl ketone which can be confirmed by the iodoform test
So the remaining chemical in the bottle is the benzaldehyde.
