1. Imagine that you are attempting to determine the concentration of an acid by titration with a solution of sodium hydroxide with a known concentration, using phenolphthalein as an indicator. For each of the following sources of error, indicate whether the calculated concentration of acid would be too high or too low. . An air bubble was present in the tip of the buret before beginning the titration but was absent at the end of the titration. ii. You added too much base and went beyond the end point. iii. Some of the acid splashed on to the sides of the flask and wasn't titrated.Explanation / Answer
We know, V1S1 = V2S2; conc of acid, S2 = V1S1/V2; V2 is vol of acid, V1 and S1 are vol and concentration of NaOH respectively.
1) if an air bubble was present in the buret, then the actual volume of NaOH solution required to achieve the end point will be larger than the actual volume required, so according to the above equation, S2 would be higher than the actual value.
2) actual volume of NaOH solution will be lesser than the volume you added too much, so according to the above equation, S2 would be higher than the actual value.
3) in that case less vol of base will be needed for end point, so V1 will reduce, making S2 i.e, concentration acid leeser than actual.
