Question
Determination of a Chemical Formula Write your answers in pen and include units Pre-Laboratory Questions 1. Iron(II) chloride tetrahydrate, FeCl2,.4H20 has a formula weight of 198.1 g/mol. (a) If we removed all the water from 198.1 g of FeCl24H O, how much water would we get? (b) After that, if we removed all the chlorine, how much iron would remain? 2. Define molar mass. 3. What is the color of copper chloride hydrate? 4. What are the color changes you can see when you heat the sample? Why? 5. What is an anhydrous compound? A compound is found to contain 24.8% carbon, 2.0% hydrogen and 73.2% chlorine with a molecular mass of 96.9 g/mol. What is the molecular formula? 6. 69Explanation / Answer
1. Molecular weight of FeCl2.4H2O :198.1 g / mole
If water is removed then from 198.1g of Ferrous chloride we will remove 4 moles of water will be removed ( molecular weight of water = 18g / mole )
So mass of water = 4X18 = 72 grams
b. MAss of FeCl2 left= 198.1 - 72 = 126.1 grams
If chlorine is removed from FeCl2 , then the mass of chlorine removed will be = 35.45 X 2 = 70.9 grams approx
so Iron left = 126.1 - 70.9 = 55.2 g approx.
